West Dunbartonshire Council's "Street Lighting Unit" is part of the Commercial and Technical Services Department and is responsible for the operation and maintenance of 14,100 lighting columns across the West Dunbartonshire area.
West Dunbartonshire Council as a Roads Authority is responsible for:
-
Providing and maintaining a lighting system for the roads, footways, remote footpaths and pedestrianised areas that are shown on the "List of Roads" and have been adopted for public maintenance
-
Lighting car parks (normally next to shopping areas) or park and ride facilities that have been taken over for maintenance purposes.
This responsibility extends only to lighting the area within the boundaries of the road, footpath or car park and not gardens, house access paths, driveways or private parking areas. When the lighting system in an area is being upgraded or replaced, the local councillor is informed when works are to take place. Where possible, column positions can be adjusted, within available tolerances, to take account of residents' requests.
