Road repairs are carried out in a variety of ways:
|
Potholing
|
To replace small areas of road surface, most often in areas subjected to heavy use by large vehicles. Potholes can appear quickly almost anywhere and can not be predicted, although once identified repairs can be completed as quickly as possible. |
| Patching |
Where clusters of adjacent potholes appear, or where larger areas of road are assessed as being unstable, large patches (often to full depth of road construction) are carried out to restore the integrity of the road. |
| Resurfacing |
To replace the top 20-40mm of road surface to provide a smooth, skid-resistant surface. |
| Reconstruction |
To replace full sections of road where no other option exists to retain the roads integrity and ability to carry vehicles. |
Private Roads and Streets
Not all roads and streets with the West Dunbartonshire Council Area have been adopted by the Council. Those roads and streets not adopted are not maintained by the Council, this includes private streets.
Where streets have been recently constructed to serve new developments, the developer is responsible for any necessary maintenance. The developer may apply for the street to be adopted by the Council. If approved the responsibility for maintaining the street is transferred to the Council and the street is added to the register of adopted roads.
Public Utility Works
Work is regularly carried out on West Dunbartonshire's road network by organisations such as Scottish Power, BT, Transco, NTL, etc. to repair, maintain or install their equipment.
The Council inspects these works, if they are found to be of poor standard or dangerous to vehicles or pedestrians, the company will be directed to make the work safe.
