Kerbcraft Child Pedestrian Training Scheme

Kerbcraft is a Child Pedestrian Training Scheme aimed at Primary One and Two children. The scheme was originally piloted in Drumchapel in the early 80's by Professor James Thomson of Strathclyde University.

The pilot was so successful that the scheme has been launched throughout the United Kingdom. West Dunbartonshire is one of the only authorities to commit permanent funding to enable the hard work to continue.

The scheme aims to teach children three pedestrian skills.

  • Choosing Safe Places and routes to cross the road.
  • Crossing Safely at Parked Cars.
  • Crossing Safely at Junctions.

The scheme is unique in that parent, grandparents and guardians volunteer to train the children after receiving training from the scheme co-ordinator.

Kerbcraft has delivered training to over 500 children within West Dunbartonshire and has now become a firm favourite within the school timetable. The scheme helps not only to deliver key pedestrian skills, but also promotes health and well being.

42% of our volunteers have utilised their Kerbcraft skills to enter into the workplace and further education. The training volunteers receive reaches farther than just Road Safety. Training is provided for interview skills, time management, assertiveness, team building, interactive communication and presentation. These skills are often sought after by employers and further education establishments and have delivered real benefits to local people.
