Adoption of Children from Birth to Two Years

West Dunbartonshire Council is a member of the Glasgow and West of Scotland Adoption Service (GWSAS), a partnership of local authorities in the West of Scotland, administered by Glasgow City Council.  GWSAS focuses on providing adoptive parents for children from birth to two years and all enquirers from West Dunbartonshire Council will be referred to it.

For GWSAS to accept an application to start the process of becoming an adopter, enquirers must meet certain eligibility criteria:

  • They must be over 21 years of age

  • They must be under 39 years and 6 months on the point of application, if they are single, so their application can be heard by the Adoption Panel before their 40th birthday.  Where the applicants are a couple, the younger partner is required to meet the same criterion while the older partner must not be older than 44 years and 6 months when the application is made and not older than 45 years when the application is presented to the Adoption Panel.

  • Where the applicants are a couple they must have lived together for at least two years prior to their initial enquiry and be married to each other.

  • They must not be undergoing infertility treatment or be on a waiting list for it.  Basic medical investigation of infertility must have been undertaken.  (It is not a requirement that they are childless)

If you meet these criteria and want to be considered for the adoption of children aged two years and under you are advised to contact:

FAMILIES FOR CHILDREN, PO BOX 7535, GLASGOW, G42 2 AZ

You will receive further information from the Service and, if you meet the criteria, be invited to an enquirers’ information meeting.  Once you have been through the introductory preparation process and have submitted your application you will be referred back to West Dunbartonshire Council in order for a locally based fostering and adoption social worker to undertake the assessment with you.
