Local Towns and Villages

Tourism and visitors are an important aspect of West Dunbartonshire with some 5.2 million visitors to Loch Lomond and The Trossachs passing towns such as Dumbarton and Alexandria. With a large investment being made to the south end of Loch Lomond, it is important that these towns capitalise on this visitor and tourism revenue to help create jobs and inward investment. Alexandria to the south is the largest town directly adjacent to the Loch, within the Vale of Leven which is made up of several villages including Balloch, Jamestown, Bonhill, Tullichewan and Renton. Gartocharn is an attractive small village that lies to the northeast of Balloch and south of Loch Lomond.

Dumbarton and Alexandria town centres, Dumbarton Waterfront; Dumbarton Castle and Rock and the Denny Tank can all benefit from economic spin-offs of the investment in the tourism infrastructure. Future partnership projects will include the enhancement and promotion of key visitor attractions and further information on these developments can be found on the Council's website. Clydebank has a long and proud history of shipbuilding and engineering but unfortunately, the area's reliance on these sectors saw a steady upturn in unemployment from the 1960s. Clydebank is now being reformed - from the revitalised Queen's Quays to a new £30 million Clydebank College and £1.3 million refurbishment of the Titan Crane, Clydebank will have its share of landmark development. Further information can be found on the Clydebank Rebuilt website.
