Waste Education

Meet 'BinMan', West Dunbartonshire Council's newest champion of recycling! The Council has launched an interactive DVD, a cartoon Eco champion (BinMan) and Text Information line for school age children aimed at encouraging waste minimisation and the use of recycling facilities both in and out of school. This falls in line with Council commitments to reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill to meet Scottish Executive and EU targets.

The Waste Aware team are committed to changing waste behaviour throughout the area and believe children can play an integral part in this, the hope being that if they learn best practice at a young age, this will continue throughout their lives. The waste minimisation education package will initially be rolled-out to Primary 4 pupils throughout the Council area giving them the opportunity to view the DVD, ask questions of a Community Waste Officer, and get involved in a specially produced game based on the 'BinMan' DVD which further emphasises the messages of waste minimisation. The waste minimisation education package also ties in with the Eco Schools project which many West Dunbartonshire schools are becoming involved in, and requires the school to take part in environmentally-friendly and sustainable projects to gain 'green flag' recognition.

This education package also heralds the start of West Dunbartonshire Council's new Recycling Text Information line. School aged children, their parents, and all West Dunbartonshire residents now have an easy, modern way in which to access information about recycling facilities in the local area by simply texting their postcode and details of what they wish to recycle to: 07785 286 924. The Waste Aware team will then reply with details of the closest Household Waste Recycling Centre or Communal Recycling Point. It is hoped this service will encourage further recycling in West Dunbartonshire, particularly for those items not collected at kerbside.

With the unique help of 'BinMan' and his team, we hope to build a super recycling West Dunbartonshire! Any queries on our education package should be directed to the Waste Aware team on: 0845 111 0050.

The Scottish Waste Aware Group (SWAG) in partnership with Eco Schools has developed a new Waste Aware Schools website to promote waste reduction, reuse and recycling within Scottish schools. The website is designed with two distinct sections: one for staff, and another for school pupils. Fun facts, games and creative activities make Waste Aware Schools a site that pupils will want to revisit time and time again to enjoy learning more about reducing, reusing and recycling waste, as well as other initiatives such as the Eco Schools Waste Prevention topic, which can help a school work towards an Eco Schools award visit the Eco Schools Scotland webpage for further information.
