Grounds Maintenance - Weed Killing

To combat weed growth on roadside kerbs and other areas we have a weed killing programme.

A weed is defined as a plant growing in a location where it is not wanted. For example, plants growing in footways channels or around street furniture. Weeds need to be controlled because of:

Appearance

  • Weeds detract from overall aesthetic values of an area

  • Weeds collect litter

Safety

  • Weeds interfere with visibility for road users and obscure traffic signs
  • Weeds in channels can prevent or slow down drainage creating flooding
  • Weed growth on footways may cause uneven slabs and broken tarmac

Physical Structure

  • Weed growth destroys paving and other surfaces.
  • Weeds may force apart kerbs and may damage structures.

How are weeds controlled?

Weeds are controlled by means of environmentally friendly but effective herbicides. When the herbicide is applied to a weed, usually by spraying, it works its way through the plant. Once the herbicide comes into contact with soil it breaks down into harmless substances i.e. carbon dioxide.

Helping to prevent the spread of invasive non-native species

We provide a service for the treatment of invasive and obnoxious plants such as Japanese Knotweed (Fallopia japonica) and giant hogweed (Heracleum mantegazzianum) in addition invasive native species such as common ragwort can also be treated.
