Hygiene Scene Highly Commended Award!

The Environmental Health Section recently entered the Hygiene Scene Hand washing Campaign and Inter-schools Competition (Primary Schools) into this year's Foodlink Communication Awards and was delighted to be awarded a Highly Commended Certificate!

The Foodlink Awards are a way of recognising excellence, creativity and innovation in Food Safety Communication and are designed to highlight the best in food safety communication in the UK. Hygiene Scene, which is supported by the Council's Hungry for Success Initiative, has resulted in over 4000 pupils taking part in hand washing promotion lessons and activities.

The competition element of the campaign meant that the hand washing message reached the wider community via wall displays in schools, school events (parent's evenings and assemblies), schools websites and media coverage (newspapers, radio etc).

EH - Hungry for Success - Health Promotion

Bonhill Primary scooped up the £500 first prize! Speaking of the school's involvement Rae Strang (Headteacher) said "Our whole school, from P1 - P7, participated in this campaign. It provided a great opportunity for every pupil and staff member to become involved. Each class carried out 2 or 3 activities which were designed at exploring germs and hygiene promotion. A huge range of activities took place including the composition of songs, designing bugs and the creation of information leaflets.

The list of activities and relevant websites, which were provided, were very useful in assisting staff to develop fun and motivating lessons. The children enjoyed visiting these websites and participating in the activities. The Glogerm Kit and Glitter Activity were well received by the children and acted as motivating ways to launch this campaign within the school. Overall we believe that this campaign provided valuable learning experiences for pupils".

Hygiene Scene is just one of the many successful food safety promotion campaigns run by the Environmental Health Section. Other food safety and hygiene promotion campaigns are aimed at the wider community including elderly groups, secondary schools and pre 5 nursery pupils, parents and staff.
