Community Regeneration Fund Sports Development Programme

Community Regeneration Fund Sports Development Programme

In 2002, West Dunbartonshire Council was successful in gaining funding through the Scottish Executive's Better Neighbourhood Services Fund (BNSF). From this funding, £60,000 per year was awarded to West Dunbartonshire Council Sports Development Unit to deliver a programme of sport and physical activity to young people from areas of social and economic deprivation. The main focus of the project is to deliver a programme of pre-school age sport for 3-5 year olds and a programme of after-school sport for 8-12 year olds. It also targets local people aged 14 years and over as volunteers and sports coaches. A programme of multi-sports festivals for local 8-16 year olds is also

delivered by this project on an annual basis. The title of the funding for the project has since changed from BNSF to Community Regeneration Fund (CRF).

This project has been innovative in its approach as it has enabled West Dunbartonshire Council's Sports Development Unit to become the first Sports Development Unit in Scotland to deliver weekly sports activities in 100% of local authority managed Early Education and Childcare Centres. This project has developed into an extremely invaluable sports programme for West Dunbartonshire residents. All programmes delivered by the project are free for participants to ensure the activities are available to all young people. There are currently over 2,100 children participating in the programme every week, which highlights the cost effectiveness and the impact that the project has had in West Dunbartonshire. The Scottish Executive has used this project as an example of best practice in delivering high quality value for money services to the community.

'A brilliant initiative - well run with great staff. Children really enjoy it' (Aitkenbar After-school Sports Club, Bellsmyre).
