Saint Martin's Primary - History

The original school was built as a Chapel school in the grounds of St Martin's Church, Main Street, Renton in 1900. The present school was built in 1968 and is situated in the grounds of the Flowers Estate and Orchard.

The school celebrated it's centenary on the 26th February 2000 - the start of the new millennium. This was a wonderful achievement for the school and the community.

Whilst planning this event, the school thought up a motto for the school badge which was based on the school hymn - "Martin the Blessed"

This motto "Blessed and Brave" plus the centenary Cup were conferred on the school by Provost Alistair MacDonald at the Centenary Mass on 28th February. A brass Dedication Plaque was given to the school by Renton Primary as a mark of friendship and mutual respect.

Parents and people from the wider community contributed photographs of their time at St Martin's and associations with the school. A photographic display was mounted and this proved to be very exciting and aroused a great deal of discussion within and outwith the community.

People from all around the world return to view their past and that of their relatives e.g. Mrs Ferns was a long serving member of staff. Her son Gerard Ferns had moved overseas to Jersey, New York but he never forgot the school where his mother taught. He became a benefactor of the school and frequently sent donations for the benefit of the pupils of St Martin's. When he died in 2003, the school planted a Weeping Birchtree and erected a plague in the quadrant of the school grounds.
