Clydebank High School Library

"In a world where knowledge is rapidly expanding, the way
forward in education must be through equipping students of all
ages with the skills to find out and learn independently from a
range of resources. At the same time increasing leisure will
be enriched by developing the habit of reading for pleasure.
The school library has a vital role to play in both processes."

School Library Association - 'Steps in the right direction'

Mission Statement

The aim of the Library Resource Centre (LRC) is to provide a welcoming environment in which pupils are given the space, materials, and information skills they need in order to research, study and learn. The LRC also aims to actively encourage the enjoyment and development of reading for pleasure amongst all members of the Clydebank High School community.

The role of the library in the school:

  • To provide a central resource which supports the whole school curriculum and is an integral part of teaching and learning.
  • To provide a variety of resources to help pupils with homework, projects and exam revision.
  • To develop essential information skills through specific library lessons for all S1 and S2 pupils.
  • To encourage the development of lifelong learning skills and individual learning.
  • To expand and develop a wide choice of fiction in order to encourage reading at all levels.
General Information

The school library is located in the English corridor of the Tower Block building and is run by Mrs Crawford our full-time qualified Librarian. The librarian supports the aims and objectives of the library, maintains and develops stock, updates resources and manages the computers and library system. CHS also has Library Assistants who help at lunchtimes with book issues and returns, shelving, computer booking and assisting with enquiries. These Library Assistants are senior pupils, usually prefects, who volunteer their time in order to develop a variety of skills and fulfil their school citizenship requirements. In the third term of the school year pupils from S1-S3 are allowed to help in the library. If you are interested in being a library helper, please see Mrs Crawford.

The library houses a large variety of reference, non-fiction, and fiction material as well as DVDs, videos, CD ROMs, and magazines for pupils to borrow or use within the library. The library uses the Dynix automated system which allows pupils to check the catalogue in school or from home through the Internet.

There are currently 22 PC's with Microsoft Office package and all with Internet access. Classes, groups and individuals can all book the library computers for study, typing up, or project work. The library computers will soon be connected to the CHS network, and pupils and staff will be able to access their own files.

There is also a careers library housing information on jobs, college and university courses, apprenticeships and gap year placements.

Pupils and staff are automatically members of the library and no forms need filled in or cards issued. Pupils can borrow up to two books at a time for a two-week loan period. Staff and senior pupils can borrow more books and for longer periods by asking Mrs Crawford.

The library is open every day from 9.00am, at intervals and lunchtimes, and after school until 4.30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays and until 4.00pm on Fridays. The library is used after school on Mondays by the Young Enterprise Group and on Wednesdays for the Senior Supported Study.

All S1 and S2 classes come to the library during their English period in order to find out about how the library works and to learn essential information skills.
