Active Schools Volunteers

The active schools logo

Active Schools aims to offer children and young people opportunities and the motivation to adopt active, healthy lifestyles, now and into adulthood. Volunteers are a key element of the supporting infrastructure within schools and the wider community. By recruiting volunters who deliver physical activity and sport before, during and after school, Active Schools can increase the activity levels of pupils in after school clubs including:

Activity clubs, Athletics, Basketball, Badminton, Boxing, Cycling, Dance,

Football, Fitness, Golf, Health related activities, Martial arts, Netball,

Outdoor activities, Playground games and Table Tennis.

This is Active Schools opportunity to highlight the valuable contribution made by volunteers and to express our gratitude to all for their continued support and commitment.

Since its inception in 2004, West Dunbartonshire’s Active Schools team have encouraged and supported volunteers in schools by providing resources, specialist training, mentoring and development opportunities - leading to a highly skilled, well informed and efficient delivery network across the authority. On average each year this network of about 100 volunteers and 70 coaches deliver over 4,000 activity sessions with over 100,000 attendances each year.

Until recently, most of the volunteers have been school staff (Teachers, Learning Assistants, Janitors etc),    however to enhance the existing network and provide more   activity opportunities for pupils, the Active Schools team have now implemented plans to involve more of the wider school community (e.g. parents, senior pupils, community volunteers from the local area) . In partnership with Sports Development and Outdoor Education, a ‘Good Practice Guide’ for volunteers has been published in addition to staff and volunteer handbooks. These outline a code of conduct, coaching requirements, practices and expectations for all concerned and  provide the foundation for a consistent approach to the recruitment, support and retention of volunteers. Early successes include recruiting parent volunteers at Gartocharn Primary School, where after training, four volunteers now run weekly after-school Netball and Badminton clubs.
