Active Schools Football

Active Schools aim to provide a wide variety of opportunities to get children participating in regular physical activity in a safe and fun environment.  One of the most popular ways in which active schools achieves this getting children ad young people involved in football.

There are numerous extra-curricular football clubs running throughout West Dunbartonshire operating with the help and support of Active Schools. These clubs give pupils the chance to be involved in competitive and non-competitive activity providing enjoyable and worthwhile experiences.  Throughout the year Active Schools organise and support various inter-school football games and are responsible for an ongoing 7 a-side friendly football league.

Using football, important issues such as Anti-Sectarianism can be tackled, where we aim to improve understanding and break barriers between denominational and non-denominational school pupils. Targeting pupils during their transition from Primary to Secondary School is another key area of work for Active Schools. Annually staging an S1 Football Tournament and Clydebank Transitional festivals, we aim to provide pupils with a positive stepping stone by encouraging their interaction at a neutral sporting event.

One of sportscotland’s key priorities is to encourage more girls and young women to participate in sport and physical activity.  Football is the fastest growing sport for girls in Britain and is key in getting girls more active.  Active Schools are currently working alongside Football Development to increase opportunities to get girls involved in football.
