Providing the foundations for all aspects of sport and physical activity, athletics is an integral part of the PE curriculum across all stages. Active Schools work in close partnership with Athletics Development to increase and enhance opportunities for children and young people within the area to experience various athletics disciplines. Supporting local events by encouraging and facilitating participation, Active Schools also provide competitive intra school festival opportunities including the Clydebank Festival of Cross Country and the annual regional Athletics Qualifying matches.
Through the provision of training, equipment and mentoring, Active Schools support volunteers delivering athletics after school clubs and assist in creating pathways to facilitate long term participation in the sport. Run-Jump-Throw clubs such as one in Gavinburn Primary School are closely linked with the West Dunbartonshire Amateur Athletics Club.
