Active Playgrounds

pupils being active in the playground

Outdoor spaces in schools play a vital role in assisting the development of children, helping them lead healthier lifestyles whilst having fun and staying safe at the same time.

Active Schools aim to utilize this space to ensure that all pupils have the opportunity to be more active, more often. Promoting activity at break and lunchtimes is an ideal way of increasing physical activity levels of children and young people and makes a significant contribution towards the recommended one hour a day of moderate physical activity.

Indeed for many children these break times may be the only time they are active, so it is important that we fully utilise this opportunity for physical activity during the school day.

Promoting activity at break times and lunchtimes can help to:
  • Increase pupils' daily activity levels and improve their health

  • Extend the opportunities for pupils to experience and develop their physical skills

  • Help pupils to develop appropriate moral and social behaviour

  • Can act as a deterrent to behavioral problems in the playground

  • Reduce bullying

  • Give pupils a break from the classroom and an opportunity to 'let off steam'

  • Give pupils a chance to socialise and make friends.

Active Schools aims to promote Active Playgrounds through providing Play Leader Training for the older primary pupils. We also provide schools with a variety of stimulating playground equipment and ideas for fun and safe games which can be used in the playground in order to encourage pupils to be more active.
