He said: “When I’m in Scotland I always stay in Balloch, West Dunbartonshire. The natural beauty, stunning scenery of Loch Lomond and it’s accessibility to Glasgow make it the perfect choice.”
He continued: “The boxer I manage, Carl Frampton, gets excellent sparring out in Stepps with Commonwealth Champion, John Simpson. In addition, we use the Meadow Centre in Dumbarton for our strength and conditioning work. The facilities are first class and the staff and other customers are always so welcoming. Another main attraction is that Carl loves to run by the Loch and through Balloch. We can’t get enough of the place.”
Barry McGuigan was one of the best boxers of his generation. As an amateur he won a multitude of titles. At the tender age of 17, he took the gold medal at the 1978 Commonwealth Games and as a Professional he won the British, European and World Titles.
On a memorable, balmy night in June 1985, a television audience of twenty million watched as McGuigan achieved his dream and became Featherweight Champion of the World by defeating Eusebio Pedroza, voted ‘Fight of the Year’ by Ring magazine. His amazing performance later captured him another title of BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
Barry McGuigan was voted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame in 2000 and the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2005 and he is now keen to pass on that experience to another young Irish boxer.
