West Dunbartonshire’s streets are among the cleanest in Scotland, according to an annual report by the Local Environment Audit and Management System (LEAMS).
The report compares the cleanliness of streets across 31 of the 32 Scottish local authorities, with West Dunbartonshire coming 4th in the rankings.
Each authority is given a “Cleanliness Index” number based on bi-monthly surveys that look at a number of criteria, such as standard of cleanliness, litter bins, sources of litter, types of litter, and aspects of environmental quality.
West Dunbartonshire’s Cleanliness Index of 76 is fourth highest of the 31 participating authorities and ranks top of the nine authorities within the ‘Urban’ category. The national minimum acceptable standard is a Cleanliness Index of 67, and the average national Cleanliness Index is 74.
Councillor William Hendrie, West Dunbartonshire Council’s convener for Housing, Environmental Services and Economic Development said: "These results show that the Council is performing very well in comparison to other local authorities across the whole of Scotland when it comes to the cleanliness of its streets. A Cleanliness Index of 76 is a great achievement which we will strive to maintain for the current year.”
