Seasons for Growth – Fischy Music

Yvonne from Fischy music

13th May 2010

Pupils from 10 primary schools from across West Dunbartonshire were gathered today at St Peter the Apostle High School, Clydebank for a very touching, interactive music session with Fischy musicians as part of the Seasons for Growth programme.

The Seasons for Growth education programme for children and young people was developed in Australia by the Good Grief Organisation and teaches pupils to express their feelings of bereavement, loss and major change through discussion, art, music, literature and drama and is essentially, an alternative method to dealing with major change in their lives.

Children embark on an 8 week programme working through activities and discussions which teaches them grief is like the seasons.  The programmes are led by two trained Companions who facilitate the young people’s progress through teaching them to understand their own situation and learn new ways of coping with the difficulties confronting them.

Music by Fischy Music, a charity which promotes the social, emotional and spiritual wellbeing of children and families plays an integral part in the programme by producing songs that are catchy, easy to learn and appealing to children of all ages put on a sterling performance, demonstrating on-the-spot song making , expressive dance moves and singing about all manner emotions and how we feel about ourselves.

Anne Ritchie, Joint Interim Director of Social Work and Health said:

“The Council's Social Work & Health Services supports the Seasons for Growth programme in West Dunbartonshire schools through Choose Life funding. Choose Life is a national and local initiative to prevent suicide and self harm and forms part of the Scottish Government's mental health improvement programme - Towards a Mentally Flourishing Scotland.”

She continued: “Choose Life in West Dunbartonshire supports projects such as Seasons for Growth that build emotional resilience. We also train frontline staff in suicide prevention skills and co-ordinate partnership working. Our education staff have shown tremendous commitment to rolling out the Seasons programme in West Dunbartonshire schools and we are proud that they are Scottish leaders in this important work.”

West Dunbartonshire was selected to receive the performance, which is funded through Cash for Kids in recognition of the way the programme has been embraced in authority.

Cllr May Smillie, Convenor for Education said:

“I can’t remember the last time I danced, sang and played pretend trumpet with a huge room full of young people. What a fantastic and really touching event and how brilliantly the pupils are responding to it. Everyone has had a great time.”

10 year old Melissa who had been taking part with Seasons for Growth for the last 4 weeks explained:

Today was really fun. I have been taking part in Seasons for Growth along with 7 others and we have been talking about our feelings and writing in a special journal  about what has happened in our lives. It makes you feel better and a bit happier.”

When asked if she would recommend Seasons for Growth to others, Melissa said, “Oh yes. It has really helped me to move on.”

37 Seasons for Growth groups ran last year in West Dunbartonshire and most schools within the authority have trained staff able to run groups offering vital support to children.
