Noisy neighbours? We can help

Thursday 10th June 2010

West Dunbartonshire Council is reminding local people that it is here to help with the problem of nuisance noise, after a survey carried out by Which? for Noise Action Week found that at least three million adults in Britain suffer from noisy neighbours, but over 30 per cent fail to take action.

The survey revealed that six in ten of people who reported noisy neighbours had lost sleep, while one in ten have had their work or health affected. Others said noise made them irritable, angry or stressed.

Loud voices and neighbours arguing were found to be the most disturbing noise (58%), followed by blaring music or television (40%). At least 26% of people were bothered by doors slamming and 15% of people were disturbed by regular parties.

Despite this, less than a quarter of those surveyed had reported the noise to their local authority.

The Council’s spokesperson for Corporate Services, Councillor Craig McLaughlin, said: “Noise is a common source of nuisance and can be very upsetting. If you have tried speaking to your neighbour in a reasonable way, but the problem persists, then report it to the Council. The Council’s Environmental Health team is there to investigate noise complaints and can use enforcement powers in some cases to try to help.”
