Record Sleeve Art Show!

24th March 2010

West Dunbartonshire Council’s Culture Services are about to welcome a cracking, new, quirky exhibition co-ordinated by SITE Exhibitions (Scottish Independent Touring Exhibitions) presenting fifty key examples of the art of LP cover design and telling the history of sleeve art during the decades of vinyl's dominance which will open at the Backdoor Gallery, Dalmuir Library on March 29th and will run until April 30th.

Head of Culture, Gill graham explains, “The exhibitionexplores the development of sleeve art from the 1950s to the 1980s, including such issues as the shift from photographic portraits of the artistes to the use of abstract art, reflections of wider design fashions such as psychedelica, and the growth of a DIY aesthetic in the wake of punk.”

Sleeve Art - 50 Classic Album Covers

In addition to the inclusion of a number of classics, the exhibition uses a number of lesser-known examples intended to provoke debate over what makes a great LP cover.

Convenor for Education, Councillor May Smillie explains, “For anyone below a certain age, LP’s stands for Long Players – full albums on vinyl records! Its pre- cd and pre mp3! My lord, that makes me feel pre-historic!!”
