Two very important guests will be cycling to Linnvale Primary School in Clydebank on Friday 12th March to help pupils and staff celebrate the school’s achievement in becoming the first Cycle Friendly School in West Dunbartonshire.
Bill Wright, Chairman of Cycling Scotland, and Jim Riach, Cycling Scotland’s Education and Training Manager, will get ‘on their bikes’ to congratulate the school in receiving the Cycle Friendly School Award.
This award scheme, run by Cycling Scotland, aims to promote cycling as part of the whole school culture and increase the number of pupils and staff cycling on all journeys, and especially the school journey.
Schools assess just how cycle friendly their school is under three headings - infrastructure, promotion and incentives. All the staff and pupils at Linnvale Primary School have worked extremely hard to raise the profile of cycling within the school and to encourage more cycling on the school journey.
School Cycle Champion, Mrs Lucille Wright, said: “Cycling is fun, healthy, practical, inexpensive and good for the environment. The award scheme helped us look at how we can provide the opportunity for more pupils and staff to make their journey to school more active by cycling.”
Head teacher, Mrs Doreen Philips, said: “We are delighted that all this pedal power has paid off and Linnvale Primary is the first school in the Council to achieve the Cycle Friendly School Award.”
Cllr William Hendrie, Convener for Housing, Environmental & Economic Development, added: “More children walking and cycling to and from school will help to reduce the congestion around schools and will also give children important opportunities to practise their road user skills. Many of our schools also participate in the Scottish Cycle Training Scheme, providing children with the knowledge and skills required for using their bikes safely for journeys.”
