Our Lady And St Patrick’s High School – Fireworks Safety

29th March 2010

Two talented pupils from Our Lady and St Patrick’s High School have been recognised for their work in producing a DVD on the subject of firework safety.

Rosie Cole and Victoria Allen, along with their teacher Hazel Keay organised the DVD after being approached by the West Dunbartonshire Fireworks Task Group. The DVD shows the girls quizzing officers from Strathclyde Fire and Rescue, the Police, and Trading Standards on the dangers of fireworks and how the law impacts on sellers and users, with a particular emphasis on young people and anti-social behaviour. The interviews are interspersed with feedback from some of their fellow pupils on what they have learned.

Roseanne and Victoria were awarded certificates and their school was presented with vouchers from West Dunbartonshire Community Safety Partnership at a ceremony at theStrathclyde Fire and Rescue Community Fire Station  in Clydebank on Wednesday 24 March.

The Task Group will use the DVD in coming years to promote their safety message.

Head Teacher of Our Lady and St Patrick’s Charles Rooney says: “We were only too pleased to help when the Fireworks Group approached the school. Rosie and Victoria not only carried out interviews, they produced the DVD too, taking care of lighting, sound and all the things that make it look good. It’s a very professional piece of work which both they and we can be proud of.”

Tony Cairns, Chair of the Fireworks Task Group said: “We are very grateful to the school for putting this excellent DVD together. Each year we try to get our message on firework and bonfire safety across to as many young people in West Dunbartonshire as possible. Young people know best what appeals to other young people and the DVD will be a key part of our future campaigns.”

Area Commander Boyle says “We have worked extremely hard with the young people of West Dunbartonshire in order to reduce the levels of Anti Social Behaviour in the area. We have made a significant impact but although the levels are very much reduced Anti Social Behaviour still accounts for 50% of the 2200 Incidents we attend. I was therefore delighted and very impressed when I viewed the DVD that was produced by this talented duo...trio really as we must include their teacher Hazel Keay. To see young people doing what they can to improve the safety and lives of the citizens of our communities is always pleasing but to see it done in such an effective way is something special. I would congratulate the school and in particular Rosie, Victoria and their teacher Hazel for what they have achieved they should be extremely proud of themselves”.
