Winter Travel

7th January 2010

As a result of supply difficulties, West Dunbartonshire Council are now down to critically low salt stock levels.  To ensure that we can continue to undertake priority gritting it will now be necessary to limit treatment to priority carriageway routes only, ensuring that our principal A & B class roads, bus routes, roads providing access to emergency service depots, hospital and roads with steep inclines are treated in the first instance.  All secondary road and footway routes may remain ungritted and we would warn all motorists to exercise extreme caution as many roads are likely to be icy. The Council are doing everything they can to replenish salt stocks and to keep the roads as safe as possible.

Advice for Drivers

During icy or snowy weather, you should:

  • keep your windscreen clear;

  • reduce speed;

  • brake gently;

  • increase the gap between you and the car in front;

  • use dipped headlights when visibility is poor;

  • use the highest gear possible;

  • avoid hills if possible, and

  • take care all of the time
