Andrew McKay, Active Schools Manager: “Our motto is; More children, more active, more often! It’s a real pleasure to be able to support the work of volunteers at St Peter the Apostle High School and it’s great to see a school provide so many opportunities for young people of all ages, to be active on a regular basis.”
“The commitment and dedication of volunteers in sport has such a positive impact on the health and well-being of young people. My team of Active Schools Coordinators will continue to work closely with schools and community groups to support volunteers who provide physical activity and sport to the young people of West Dunbartonshire.”
St Peter the Apostle High School is currently accredited via the SFA Schools Quality Mark Scheme and is working towards the next level of that scheme. The Quality Mark means that the school have met certain criteria set by the Scottish Football Association and are committed to developing appropriate management; administration; player and coach development; forward planning and welfare policies in relation to football.
St Peter the Apostle High School teacher, Mark Ferrier adds:
“The support from Active Schools and the provision of this equipment is greatly appreciated and will help tremendously as we move forward and develop our school football teams.”
The Active Schools team supports a wide variety of extra-curricular and community based physical activity and sport opportunities for children and young people aged 3-18 right across West Dunbartonshire – from cheerleading to golf and football to tennis, and many more in between.
This is done via the recruitment, development and retention of volunteers; provision of suitable equipment; establishment of school – sports club links; targeted work to increase participation amongst disengaged groups; and strong partnership with other agencies. In the past year alone, Active Schools have supported over 130 volunteers delivering physical activities and sport in West Dunbartonshire, brought in numerous specialist coaches from local clubs to primary and secondary schools, established female orientated clubs for girls and been integral to the creation of the Dunbartonshire Disability Sports Club - to name but a few projects. For April -December 2009 alone, this accounted for 1219 physical activity and sport sessions with 20,236 attendances.
