Moving House

The Council Tax is worked out on a daily basis. If you move home you may stop being the liable person for your old home and may become the liable person for your new home. You should tell your council about your move so that it can adjust your bill and make sure you pay the right amount. This is especially important if you move to a new council area as you may be due a refund, depending on the method you used to pay the Council Tax and how much has already been paid.

If you are moving house you should contact the Council Tax office and let them know the details of your move.

You can do this by:

  1. Writing a letter with all the details of your move and sending it to Council Tax Section, Finance, West Dunbartonshire Council, Garshake Road, Dumbarton. G82 3PU
  2. Telephone the Council Tax Section on 01389 737444 and providing all the details on the telephone
  3. Send us an e-mail to council.tax@west-dunbarton.gov.uk with all the details of your move

When you contact us you should provide the following information.

Owner Occupiers

The reference number of the property you are leaving. You should also tell us the date you are vacating the property and the date you are handing over the keys if this is different. You should also advise us of your new address (even if it is not in West Dunbartonshire), the date you are getting the keys and the name of the person you are purchasing it from. We also need the name of your solicitor and the name of the person who is buying your property.

Tenants

The reference number of the property you are leaving. You should tell us the date you are vacating the property and the date you are handing over the keys if this is different. It is your interest to provide this information so that you do not continue to be charged Council Tax at a property you do not reside in.
