Commemoration

We are currently able to offer a number of options for commemorating those whose final passing took place at the Clydebank Crematorium, these being:

  • Entry to the Books of Remembrance

  • Gold Inscribed Leather Commemorative Plaque

  • Marble Memorial Plaque

  • Dedicated Commemorative Hymnal Plate

  • Dedicated Commemorative Brass Plaque

The options available are each different in character and price. The prices for the commemorative items are reviewed annually and are normally subject to a small rise to cover increases in cost for manufacture and supply. The purchase costs quoted within this leaflet are therefore valid only until 31 March 2004. Further information on costs, ordering procedure, delivery time-scales etc. can be obtained from the Burials and Cremation Administration Office at the address.

The Books of Remembrance

The Books of Remembrance, an example of fine Scottish craftsmanship, are housed within the Hall of Remembrance and the Flower Room. The Hall of Remembrance overlooks the Lawn of Remembrance, opening up to spectacular views of the River Clyde and further beyond. The Crematorium retains the services of a professional calligrapher to regularly visit the crematorium and add new entries. This compare well to systems employed by other crematoria where their Books of Remembrance are sent away annually, for an extended period, to have new entries added.

The books contain commemorative messages from loved ones and the books are based in date order, that is, they correspond to the calendar year. The pages are turned each day to correspond with the current date. Entries to the books are normally made to match a special or significant date of the deceased, for example date of birth, wedding anniversary, date of death etc. The minimum size of entry is two lines, the maximum entry is eight lines. The entry can also, for an additional charge, incorporate a crest, which may be, for example, a family crest, a military crest, a club crest etc.

Gold Inscribed Leather Commemorative Plaque

These memorial plaques measure 10.5 x 2 inches and are produced in deep blue Niger leather with the memorial inscription in 23.75 carat English Gold Leaf. The classic Byzantine blue tone of the leather creates a striking contrast to the brilliance of the gold lettering to provide a dignified memorial.

Each individual panel is carefully lettered in gold to the applicant’s instructions in accordance with the conventions of the scheme, the central convention being that the top line of the plaque must bear the name of the deceased. The plaques are displayed in specially commissioned display cabinets within the Hall of Remembrance or the Flower Room. The plaques are purchased for an initial display period of ten years with an option thereafter for a further display period.

Marble Memorial Plaque

The Marble Memorial Plaques are ensconced on the Memorial Wall in the adjacent North Dalnottar Cemetery, the wall being in close proximity to the cremation remains interment section of the cemetery.

The Plaques are of the finest marble and measure approximately 24 x 18 inches and the wall is faced with fyfestone. The plaques when purchased are fitted to the wall in perpetuity however the cost of the plaque does not include the cost of engraving. The applicant requires to make separate arrangements with a sculptor of their choice in respect of the message to be engraved on the plaque. Only gold lettering is permitted on the plaques.

Dedicated Hymnal Plate

The hymnal plate is a tastefully decorated and personally inscribed by our calligrapher to bear the name of the deceased and the message of dedication. The hymnals are used on a daily basis therefore not only will the applicants know of the memorial to the deceased but countless others will become aware of the esteem in which the deceased was held by friends and family.

Dedicated Brass Commemorative Plaque

These plaques, in solid brass, are engraved with the name of the deceased and the message of dedication. The plaques are fitted to the top rail of the chairs within the crematorium therefore like the Hymnals, as these are used every day not only will the applicants know of the memorial to the deceased but countless others will become aware of the esteem in which the deceased was held by friends and family.

Please note that the commemorative items described above are only available if the deceased was cremated at Clydebank Crematorium, or had their cremated remains strew at the Clydebank Crematorium or had their cremated remains interred at a West Dunbartonshire Cemetery.

Information on the current costs for this service is displayed on the crematorium notice board on the Table of Fees and Charges.
