Music sharing Day - ‘Bookstart Rhymetimes’ Friday 25th January

On Friday 25th January, Rabbie Burns Day, West Dunbartonshire Libraries held a magnificent event to celebrate the great success of the Bookstart Rhymetimes pilot project organised by our Bookstart Coordinator Sophie Hawkey-Edwards.  A huge crowd of babies, toddlers and their mums, dads and grandparents attended the event in the stunning surroundings of Loch Lomond Youth Hostel.

The day was opened by Ken Graham, Manager of Lifelong Learning, and Councillor May Smillie, Convenor of Education and Lifelong Learning, who welcomed everyone to the event.  This was followed by Lesley Pinder, Project Manager of the Bookstart Rhymetime pilot project who gave an informative and lively presentation to the background to the project.

 From then on in the day was dedicated to singing, dancing and having lots of fun! West Dunbartonshire’s largest Rhymetime was held in the main hall with almost 70  babies and toddlers, lots of parents and carers, colleagues, staff and councillors all joining in with songs, rhymes and a wee Scottish jig!

The fabulous, enigmatic children’s author, Debi Gliori courageously read one of her beautiful picture books to the large crowd, ending up like the pied piper, followed round the room by lots of fascinated toddlers.

After lunch, the selection of fun workshops began.  These were based on different aspects of a Bookstart Rhymetime session;

  • the ‘Wee Ceilidh’ run by our magnificent Bookstart Music Champions Carol Laula and Yvonne Inglis, who were joined by our piper, Finn, to create a fun 'Burns - inspired' dance and song session for weans and big yins alike.

  • Debi Gliori ran an inspirational and entertaining session sharing her experiences as a children’s author, storyteller and mum of five!

  • Our Library staff ran a brilliant ‘Blue Peter’ craft workshop demonstrating how to make mini Bookstart Bear decorations allowing everyone to get messy.

The day was hectic but full of fun and a little bit of mayhem.

It was made all the better by the enthusiasm and interest of the parents and children.

It was so successful that everyone wants to do it again...
