Rescue

Section 2 (Part 1)

The Town Clerk was the Civil Defence Controller for Clydebank and it was his responsibility to direct staff in the Control Centre in the library. One of their duties was to co-ordinate the work of the Casualty and Rescue Services.

During the first night of the raids, they were soon overwhelmed by the number of requests for assistance, a situation which was exacerbated when the telecommunications lines and electricity were cut off by a direct hit on the library. Thereafter, they had to rely on messenger boys, ambulance drivers and volunteers to carry information.

During the raids, First Aid Posts at two schools were destroyed and the injured had to be moved into playground shelters or to other Posts. Despite problems of exploding bombs and of roads made almost impassable by craters and debris, ambulance crews continued to ferry the injured to First Aid Posts and, where necessary, on to hospitals outwith the town.
