Early on it became apparent that Clydebank's eight Rescue Parties were incapable of coping with the number of people trapped in bomb debris. Other districts responded very quickly to requests for assistance.
The rescuers worked in extremely dangerous situations, often amidst burning and collapsing buildings, and their courage was later recognised when a number of them, along with members of the other services, were presented with official awards.
