Section 4 (Part 2)
The Fire Services also had to work under extremely difficult conditions.
Three Auxiliary Fire Service Stations were put out of action and water supplies were lost when mains were ruptured. With huge industrial fires as well as whole streets of houses alight, firemen had to use water from bomb craters and, where possible, from the canal. Unfortunately, there was no standardisation of hose couplings at that time, which meant that outside units which had come to assist were unable to use their own hose extensions or fix them to fire hydrants. Although this reduced their effectiveness, they did manage to continue using water from static emergency tanks and from the canal.
