After the Blitz, however, nearly 18,000 people were evacuated by bus to the Vale of Leven, Helensburgh, Kirkintilloch, Coatbridge, Airdrie, Hamilton, Paisley, Bearsden, Milngavie, and other parts of Renfrewshire, Lanarkshire and Dunbartonshire.
It was estimated that as well as these "official" evacuees, as many as 25,000 others made their way to safety under their own steam.
