TPYF2 - ‘SINGER, SIRENS AND SILENT HEROES’
As part of a national initiative called Their Past Your Future Scotland, West Dunbartonshire Council is organising “Singers, Sirens and Silent Heroes”. Their Past Your Future Scotland Phase 2, is led in Scotland by Museums Galleries Scotland and funded by The Big Lottery, brings young people and older generations in the local community together to capture oral histories that focus on the Second World War and all subsequent conflicts. West Dunbartonshire Council West Dunbartonshire Council has been awarded funding towards its project ‘Singer, Sirens and Silent Heroes’ and is one of only 13 museums and gallery projects across Scotland to receive TPYF Scotland funding.
Building upon the success of West Dunbartonshire’s Their Past Your Future projects in 2005/6 ‘Singer, Sirens and Silent Heroes’is a year-long project in West Dunbartonshire. Through a series of projects ‘Singer, Sirens and Silent Heroes’aims to provide a lasting legacy of the experiences of the people of West Dunbartonshire during WWII.

Have You A Story To Tell? Mar – June 09
Will collect localmemories of the nights of the Clydebank Blitz, WWII, evacuation stories and many more.These memories will be used these to develop an online learning tool for our schools pupils, ensuring that these memories become a rich educational resource for teachers, and a global legacy for young people and the wider community involved.

Weans’ War - 26 May 09 Clydebank Town Hall
This special reminiscence project will involve young people talking and listening to veterans about their experiences during WWII. Through writing and drama, the young people will explore the war experiences and alongside published author Catherine Forde, and will develop a powerful performance piece to be presented in Clydebank Town Hall on 26th May.

The Solidarity Link - ORP Piorun March - June 09
(Online networking in Clydebank and Dalmuir Libraries) WDC Libraries will link local young people with libraries and schools in Gdansk in Poland home of ORP Piorun which helped defend the town of Clydebank against enemy bombing.

The Singer Clock: March - May 09 (Online project - libraries)
This project will include a giant online treasure hunt aiming to uncover stories and the missing pieces of the dismantled Singer clock. The clock stood undamaged through the Clydebank Blitz and came to signify the resilience and strength of the local people in the face of the enemy bombing. A 3D animated version of the clock will be reproduced online on the West Dunbartonshire Council website illustrating stories of the clock.

WWII Exhibition Clydebank Museum 15 Aug – 7 Nov 09
Marking V-J Day and the official end of World War II this major exhibition provides a background to WWII and a pictorial history of its impact on West Dunbartonshire. The exhibition will focus on the stories of veterans and survivors in particular of the Clydebank Blitz. This ‘peoples’ exhibition aims to promote the human experience of WWII, its tragedies, heroisms and the resilience of the people. The exhibition will include archives, artifacts, photographs, film footage and reconstructions, and will be supported by an extensive education programme for schools including tours, production of teaching resources and workshops.

‘Silent Heroes’ The Backdoor Gallery, Dalmuir 22nd August –26th November 09
The devastation caused by the bombing during the Clydebank Blitz brought out the best of the human spirit in those involved in the rescue campaign. Hundreds were saved through concerted team effort and the quiet acts of individual heroism. This photographic exhibition commemorates and celebrates those whose acts of bravery were played out against the backdrop of destruction.

Operation Blackboard - West Dunbartonshire Primaries September 09
Clydebank Museum and West Dunbartonshire’s Art and Education Links Programme will offer a truly memorable experience of the Second World War to local primary schools. This programme of events will immerse children in an evacuee’s view of the war.

Their Past Your Future Scotland will culminate with the launch of a website in 2010, which will feature some 300 online mini-exhibitions or 'vignettes'. The vignettes and related historic objects will be available as a classroom teaching aid via Learning and Teaching Scotland’s new Scottish schools’ intranet, Glow. This ensures that these projects become a rich educational resource for teachers and a global legacy for young people and the wider community involved.
