Remembering Scotland at War

Launch of On-line Exhibitions

A new website of on-line exhibitions is to be launched in June 2010 ensuring that the memories of war are never forgotten. Featuring oral history projects from across Scotland as media-rich online exhibitions; this dynamic website will encourage the use of technology and heritage resources for exploration and learning.

As part of this national project West Dunbartonshire Council is contributing 20 online exhibitions featuring veteran’s memories of the Clydebank Blitz. Each reminiscence will be ‘illustrated’ with associated items, including old photographs, video footage, documents, paintings, and photographed artefacts. These online exhibitions will enable the public and schools to discover personal stories which have affected their local area, making a lasting contribution to the understanding of Scotland's experience of World War II.

Culture Section Scoop Prize at Council’s Annual Awards Ceremony

The Culture Section staff are delighted to have been selected as winners of the Improving Council Award at West Dunbartonshire Council Star Awards 2009. The Awards recognise and celebrate the high quality of services provided by the council.  At this year’s ceremony the Culture Section won the award for its work with Volunteers, and was also a runner up in the Education category for its Learning Development Work with schools and community groups.

Both the Volunteer, and Learning Development Programmes promoted by the Culture Section have also been identified as examples of Good Practice by National Bodies including COSLa and Museums Galleries Scotland.

We would like to thank all our volunteers for their support throughout the year in helping us to deliver services to the public, and to school children across the authority.

     Industry US

        July 2008- June 2010

Joint funded by West Dunbartonshire Council (WDC) and the Heritage Lottery Fund IndustryUS is a two year project to research and catalogue the council’s industrial heritage archive and artefact collections. IndustryUS has employed a Documentation Officer Andrew Graham to co-ordinate the project.

West Dunbartonshire has a rich industrial heritage including: the dying and textile industries, Singer, and Shipbuilding.  IndustryUS will promote learning and public access to these industrial collections. The main areas covered by the WDC industrial collections are shipbuilding, including tools, launch artefacts, furniture and photographs.

Learning: The industrial strand of the Culture Section’s learning programme will be developed as a direct result and response to IndustryUS in year 2. The industrial elements of the collections lend themselves to key elements of A Curriculum for Excellence.

Public Access: IndustryUS aims to produce a series of brochures concentrating on discreet areas of the industrial               collection which will be available free of charge.  These will be available from and promoted by all 10 branch libraries, Clydebank Museum, the Backdoor Gallery and community education centres.  In addition the works will be available for download online via the Culture Section’s popular weblet.

Training: IndustryUS will continue and expand upon the Council’s work with Project Scotland and local volunteers, employing volunteers to work with the collections. These placements provide volunteers with the skills to return to work or compete in the job market.

IndustryUS will digitise the industrial collections and oral history collections enabling broader public accessibility. This work will be in partnership with Friends of Clydebank Museum and Clydebank Local History Society.
