Singer Display in Clydebank Museum
The Singer Room

The Singer Manufacturing Company was a major employer in Clydebank from 1885 until 1980 when the factory closed. Thousands of people worked there producing millions of sewing machines that were sold all over the world.

Clydebank Museum has the sewing machine collection and technical archive of the Singer Manufacturing Company. It was donated in 1980 when the company left Clydebank. Local visitors and school groups come to see the displays and collectors from all over the world visit to see the sewing machines and hear about factory life.

On 26 June 2005, West Dunbartonshire Council hosted a reunion of Singer employees. Read more about the day.

A short brochure, produced for Doors Open Day 2004, details some of the Singer Collection and a brief history of the Singer company. It is available here.
