Clydebank Museum 1940's Shop Interior
The Blitz Room

The Clydebank Blitz, as it became known, destroyed a third of the buildings of Clydebank, leaving 35,000 people homeless. A thousand German Bombers were used in the raids on 13 and 14 March 1941. The devastation was so complete that only seven houses remained unscathed after the bombing. The memories of the Clydebank Blitz and its effects on families and the people of Clydebank lives long in the memory of its citizens.

Further to the theme of the World War II and following the popular reconstruction of a 1940s living room the Blitz Room now houses a reconstruction of a 1940s shop.

The aim of the exhibition in the Blitz Room is to focus on elements of the Home Front with particular reference to rationing, diet and how the British public survived on limited supplies.

The shop includes original foodstuffs and goods. These include dried eggs and milk, shampoo, tins, sugar bags and crisp packets, advertisements, old coins, scales and a shop bell. There is also information regarding ration amounts.

This exhibition is sure to bring back many memories of shopping in the 1940s!

A number of short brochures have been produced by West Dunbartonshire Council's Cultural Services, focusing on elements of living during the 1940s.
