Like so many of the contingency plans made prior to the Blitz, those for feeding hungry populations were inadequate.
Organisations such as the W.V.S. and the Boys' Brigade, along with numerous volunteers, served meals (administered by the Ministry of Food), from mobile canteens, Rest Centres, army field kitchens and the Town Hall Feeding Centre.
