MUSEUM PROJECT CELEBRATED IN A ‘COOKBOOK’!
Clydebank Museum recently worked with Dalreoch Primary on a Curriculum for Excellence based project. It was felt this could be built upon using GLOW as a tool. Museums Galleries Scotland and Learning Teaching Scotland wished to support this and use the information and experiences gained to create a ‘cookbook’ that could be used in the future by other schools and museums when working on a GLOW based project. This cookbook is being launched by LTS AND MGS on May 27th 2011.
Dalreoch Primary school pupils aged 9-11 years old (Clyde Community) experienced ICT based Learning that focused on objects from the shipbuilding collection in West Dunbartonshire. Research and documentation was provided by various sources; Josiane Wyper St Andrews MPhil student, Local Studies, Dumbarton Film Club, Clydebank Asbestos Group and both museums. This was supplemented by a visit from two former shipyard workers to the school that was documented for the future.
As well as the in school activities, the project involved visits to the shipbuilding exhibit at Clydebank Museum, to the Titan Crane at the site of John Brown’s shipyard and to the Denny Tank at the Scottish Maritime Museum, Dunbartonshire. It also involved input from many partner organisations, experts and members of the local community. One of these was ‘Mr. McDonald’ the manager of the Harland and Wolff shipyard who kept the pupils in line as they designed their own cruise ships.

A Glow group was set up at local authority level (West Dunbartonshire) to hold documents and photographs provided by the museum which could be used as a resource for the Dalreoch project and for other local schools in the future.
A Glow Meet session was also run from the storeroom of the museum so that pupils could be shown objects related to the topic and have the opportunity to ask questions about them. This allowed the pupils to see a part of the museum not accessible to visitors and to see objects not currently on display. In addition to the Glow Meet session, pupils had to chance to handle a selection of objects in a ‘handling kit’ on loan from the museum.

Blueprint by Dalroech Primary pupils
The project culminated in a spectacular Ship Launch where the community was brought together in a celebration of the achievements of the pupils.
The project partners, and of course the enthusiasm of the P5, P6 and P7 students of Dalreoch Primary School, was pivotal to the success of the project. Through the development of the Shipbuilding ‘cookbook’, this project leaves the legacy of a model for museums and schools to use Glow to support future collaborative work.

CLIMBING TREES – CENSUS PROJECT
To celebrate Local History Week and the release of the 1911 Census Libraries and Museums ran ‘Climbing Trees’, an innovative schools programme. Pupils enjoyed a delve into the Local Studies archives. Working at the library with professional staff with substantial local knowledge, pupils became detectives and investigated census records, maps and valuation rolls and discovered individual histories of fifteen key people from the area. Pupils also used the library’s IT equipment and the archives to explore their heritage.
A travelling exhibition, a creative writing project, storytelling and reminiscence activities were all offered to local schools.
Local History Week culminated in a Family Research Day in Dumbarton Library.
What the teachers said:
Provided useful information for all aspects of C for E and fits into any interdisciplinary topics. This also brings the real world into the classroom. Aitkenbar Primary K. Fleming

Victorians Teachers Resource Pack
A "Victorians" Teachers resource Pack was recently launched at Dalreoch Primary.
This learning pack on the Victorians links to the Curriculum for Excellence, and provides teachers with valuable resources to enable pupils to learn through activities, local photographs and handling materials from the museum collection. In learning about their past, our young people can begin to understand and value their heritage, and be inspired by the ingenuity and aspirations of their ancestors.
The photographs below show Dalreoch P7 pupils posing in museum costumes with the Resource Pack and a photo of their school taken in the Victorian era.
The Victorian Teachers Resource packs are available free to all Primary schools in West Dunbartonshire. Please contact Maeve Dixon on 01389 772148 if your school would like to borrow a resource pack.
